This neutral color palette home in Inverness, IL, was a multi-stage project for a pair of empty nesters. We first were tasked with updating their children’s bedrooms to reflect their adult personalities and make them feel welcome during visits. Then, we completely reimagined their living room, family/entertainment area and their primary bedroom. Throughout each room, neutral tones are the unifying factor. They create a soft backdrop for luxury finishes and unique custom elements that take the neutral color palette home design to the next level.
What Are Neutral Colors for Home Decor?
The most basic neutral colors include white, beige, brown, gray, and black. However, combinations of these, like greige (a combination of gray and beige) as well as light and darker shades of these colors all fall into the neutral category as well.
Additionally, many hues that come from an earthy, natural palette, including deep reds, pinks, greens and blues, can read as neutral if they are used in the right way. For example, we used deep plum and dusty rose in several rooms to add a splash of color that didn’t pull away from the neutral color palette home design.
Neutral Color Palette Combinations
While neutral colors connect the entire home, the precise combinations of colors used in each room vary to reflect the different personalities of the children and their parents. White, Cream, Silver & Plum
In the primary bedroom for our empty nester clients, we used a warm, light cream color as the foundation for an inviting backdrop. We layered white and silver throughout the furnishings to add a touch of brightness and shine. For a pop of color and personality, we incorporated a deep plum color in the bed furnishings, lamp shade and accent chair, as well as subtle dried florals in the ensuite bathroom.
Cream, Tan, White & Gold
In the living room, we kept the design light and bright with a light cream and white as the primary colors in the space. Slightly darker tan elements in the furniture, marble fireplace, and window treatments help to ground the space and keep it from feeling too airy. Gold accents in decor details add subtle shimmer and shine for an elevated look and feel.
We used the same color scheme, with less emphasis on the dark tan elements, in one of the children’s bedrooms. Warm creamy walls with subtle texture are brightened by bright white window trim and crown moulding. The bedspread uses the same creamy color mixed with white and darker, cooler tans in the accent pillows for design dimension. Subtle brushed gold accents in the decor add a charm to the space for a quietly luxurious look.
Black, Gray, Cream & Violet
In the family entertainment space, the neutral color palette interior design incorporates darker tones to add more depth to the design. Cool gray upholstered furniture is contrasted with warm creamy walls and brushed gold accents. Black and violet in decor elements add a shock of darkness and color to the design for a bold aesthetic.
Light Tan, Gold & Dusty Rose
Dusty rose is used as part of the neutral color palette interior design for a bedroom and accompanying nursery room. The pink color adds a decidedly feminine touch to the space, making it feel soft and inviting. The light tan color that covers the walls and is incorporated into the bedspread adds additional warmth to the rooms. Soft brushed gold accents elevate and warm the design further with a touch of glam.
Charcoal, Silver, Tan & White
Another bedroom embraces darker tones for a more masculine look. Black accents and a charcoal and gray bedspread create a bold focal point in the room. Tan walls help the space maintain a sense of warmth, while white trim and walls balance the dark colors with their brightness. The window treatments incorporate the two main colors, black and tan, in a bold shadow stripe pattern.
