For their new construction second home in Geneva National, WI, our clients wanted a comfortable, casual-luxe home designed with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliance to meet the needs of their differently-abled family. The ADA provides codes and recommendations that ensure those living with a disability can equally access public spaces. However, when it comes to residential homes, ADA regulations are not commonplace. That’s why we worked to integrate ADA compliance into this wheelchair accessible home design to create a spacious, open-concept layout for extended family and social gatherings.
Accessible Home Design with Intentional Comfort & Luxury
Creating a wheelchair accessible home design can be both functional as well as elegant and luxurious. We worked closely with Doomis Custom Builders and Addis Architecture, as well as homeowners Deanna and Terry Griffins, to design a home that met their family’s accessibility needs while providing a casual-luxe look and cozy vibe for an irresistibly welcoming space. From the open-concept layout to the durable materials chosen, every detail intentionally combines functionality for an accessible home design with comfortable elegance.
Seamless Transitions from Front Entryway to Backyard Patio
To accommodate the maneuverability of someone in a wheelchair, ADA-compliance recommends entryways be at least 32-inches when the door is fully open and 5-feet of turnaround space around obstacles like furniture. With this in mind, the first floor rooms and transitional spaces feature wide doorways and large open-concept spaces.
“We’re so happy with our accessibility modifications,” says Deanna. “The level entries into the house, the wide hallways, and open kitchen spaces make maneuverability easier for everyone.”
Enduringly Beautiful Materials
To ensure a timelessly elegant look, we intentionally chose natural materials that age beautifully, including stonework detailing, custom millwork, and enduring yet lustrous wood flooring. All these finishes develop character-rich, well-worn patinas over time and easily hide scuffs or dings from regular wheelchair use.
