Fantastic Fixtures
Lighting selections are one of the most important design choices we make for your home. Great lighting is vital to setting the right mood and making you more efficient, from cozy corners and reading nooks to kitchens, offices, romantic settings and your backyard! We are always excited to go shopping for chandeliers, sconces, lamps and all of the other lighting elements that bring life to your home. I have gathered photos of more than a dozen eye-catching light fixtures from our clients’ homes. Here’s hoping they will flip the switch on some inspiration!
Focus Attention
A grand space like this suburban Chicago dining room deserves a magnificent, bespoke chandelier. Consider this: we designed the piece to cascade roughly 13 feet down from the two-story ceiling. It has 70 polished chrome rods, each with a highly faceted crystal drop at the bottom. . Every detail was meticulously analyzed – from the positioning of each individual element in the design stage to the threading and fastening of every crystal. To balance the drama of the fixture, we designed beautifully tailored chairs – with elegantly curved legs and a jewelry-like pull on the back – and added a glass-topped table that seats 12.
Match the Setting and Tone
Easy-breezy dining areas need more casual lighting, right? At this client’s Wisconsin lake home, we gravitated toward black metal because it references the dark window frames, and we opted for an ethereal style that doesn’t block the outdoor views.
Be Open to New Ideas
Our clients weren’t sure about this light fixture for their Paradise Valley, AZ dining room when we first recommended it, but now they love it and so do their guests! Sometimes we all need a gentle push outside of our comfort zones in order to experience something fresh and wonderful. As designers, we always listen to our clients, and our clients benefit when they trust our experience and taste.
Unify a Large Room
Did you notice how we unified this spacious area with black accents? We started with the oversized, black metal pendant from Hubbardton Forge and added black wall sconces that define the stairway, as well as a black-and-white art installation on the wall and a wall clock. Lesson learned? A few touches of black give a relaxed, light-colored space a dash of sophistication!
Go Big, But Don’t Overdo It
Yes, this foyer chandelier is large, but the open frame style and delicate “candle” holders make it light and airy, too. Our goal was to draw eyes upward, but not to have a looming presence overhead. Notice that the black framework of the chandelier is reminiscent of the black metal staircase with its finely forged balusters.
Embrace the Unexpected
Powder room mirrors are often flanked by sconces, but this time we did something different. The trio of pendants from Il Pezzo Mancante provides enough light for quick hair and makeup fixes while casting ethereal shadows on the walls. The pendants balance the sweeping curve and size of the wall-mounted water spout, too.
Channel the Outdoors
When you have a sensational lake view like this one, why not channel some of that vibe in your décor? With inspiration from the tree-lined shore, we selected a branch-like chandelier for this Delafield, WI family room. The wood sculpture in the corner and gear-like wood side table build the mood.
Mix It Up!
Yes, you can mix light fixture styles in the same space and you should! For this lake house kitchen in Delafield, WI, we suspended a trio of oversized glass pendants above the kitchen island, where so much more than eating happens. This expansive counter is ideal for jigsaw puzzles, games and craft projects for kids and adults, and all of that requires excellent lighting. So does cooking! For the food prep island we chose a rectangular fixture that provides even illumination across the space and clear sight-lines from anywhere in this great room.
A Touch of Tiki
These oversized, basket-like pendants give our client’s lake home foyer a coastal vibe that says “water views ahead!” The mixed shapes and sizes, plus the open texture, makes them even more interesting. When we are designing any home, we like to reference the local environment without going too theme-y. Whether you see these pendants from the first or second floors, they certainly make an impression!
Variety = Interest
What do people say about variety? It’s something about being the spice of life, right? And that’s perfect for a kitchen. These pendants from Zaffarano America are all about variety. Three different shapes. Three levels of drop from the ceiling and three finishes – gold, silver and clear glass. The materials are picked up in the kitchen detailing, such as the brushed nickel cabinet pulls and the gold metal tray on the counter.
Love the Drama
Don’t you just love a statement chandelier? The angular steel shards on this brass frame produce stunning shadows at night when the fixture is lit, and they are a bold presence by daylight.
A Hint of Romance
Lacey metal, black pendants are a romantic accent in the master bedroom of our clients’ Wisconsin lake home. We chose several other black accents that reference the fixtures: door handle, artwork frame and side table accessories. They give the room a well-considered, finished look.
Achieve New Heights
These elegantly tall table lamps make a sizable contribution to this master bedroom’s sumptuous tone. My clients travel frequently, and wanted a 5-star hotel experience that they can enjoy every day when they are at home. The lamps deliver plenty of bedside illumination while helping to fill the lofty wall space behind the bed, and they are gorgeous, too! That’s a triple design play in my book.
